Adeleke Administration Will Not Sacrifice Workers' Welfare; Dialogue Remains the Best Option, Osun Govt Tells UNIOSUNTH UNIONS.

Osogbo, September 12, 2026.

The Osun State Government has urged the leadership of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) and the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) at the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, to abandon any plan to embark on industrial action over the proposed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement for Laboratory Services, stressing that the PPP is in the best interest of the hospital, its workers and, most importantly, the people of Osun State.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Health, Dr Akindele Adekunle, made the appeal while assuring the unions that the proposed arrangement is neither privatisation nor a scheme to displace existing workers, but a strategic reform aimed at improving the hospital's capacity and service delivery.

Dr Adekunle stated categorically that no worker will lose his or her job, position or employment status on account of the proposed PPP arrangement. Rather, the initiative is expected to bring modern equipments, improve the availability of reagents and consumables, create opportunities for professional development and training, and enhance the overall quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.

He said it was therefore unnecessary for the unions to resort to threats of industrial action when the Management and Governing Board have demonstrated their willingness to engage them and resolve all areas of concern through dialogue.

“The fact that the Management is convening meetings with the unions, even when discussions with the prospective partners are still ongoing and no final agreement has been signed, is a clear demonstration that the Osun State Government values its workers and considers them important stakeholders in this reform.

“We appeal to our highly respected health workers not to shut down a hospital that exists principally to save lives. Industrial action in the health sector does not hurt government alone; it directly affects patients, particularly the poor and vulnerable who depend on public healthcare facilities,” he said.

The Special Adviser further stressed that Governor Ademola Adeleke's administration has consistently demonstrated uncommon commitment to the welfare of health workers and other public servants, adding that the Governor has never negotiated away the legitimate welfare and interests of Osun workers on the altar of politics, personal aggrandisement or political convenience.

“His Excellency, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, has consistently placed the welfare of workers and the wellbeing of our people above political considerations. He has never traded away the interests of health workers for political convenience, and this situation will not be an exception.

“The Governor's position is clear: reforms must improve the system, workers must be protected, and the people must receive better services. These three objectives are not mutually exclusive, and the proposed PPP is designed to achieve precisely that.”

Dr Adekunle explained that the Government is compelled to explore innovative and sustainable solutions to healthcare financing and service delivery, particularly in the face of the severe financial pressure currently confronting the State as a result of the illegal withholding of funds due to local governments.

He noted that government must therefore think outside the box rather than allow financial constraints to cripple critical public institutions, stressing that the health sector cannot be allowed to suffer because of funding challenges.

He also pointed out that PPP arrangements are not new in the Nigerian health sector, with similar models operating in leading teaching hospitals, where the overriding consideration remains improved healthcare delivery.

“The PPP is not about taking the hospital away from government or taking jobs away from workers. It is about bringing additional capacity, investment, technology and efficiency into a system that must continually evolve to meet the needs of our people.

“It is therefore a win-win arrangement. It is best for the workers, best for the hospital, best for government and, above all, best for the people of Osun State.”

Dr Adekunle called on JOHESU and NANNM to return to the negotiating table and take advantage of the ongoing engagement to ventilate their concerns, rather than resort to industrial action.

He assured the people of Osun State that the Adeleke administration would continue to protect workers' legitimate interests while pursuing every responsible reform necessary to guarantee accessible, affordable, quality and uninterrupted healthcare delivery.

“The Government will not compromise workers' welfare, and it will not compromise the welfare of our people. We can achieve both through sincere engagement and ultimately enhance healthcare delivery for our people above all else”, Dr Akindele stated.
