Hon. Shokeye Condemns Forceful Takeover of Osun Council Secretariats, Accuses Oyetola of Masterminding the Move.
Osogbo, February 20, 2025.
Hon. Shokeye Muhammed Shobowale, a prominent political figure and advocate for good governance in the Irepodun/Orolu/Olorunda/Oshogbo Federal Constituency, has vehemently condemned the forceful takeover of local government secretariats across Osun State by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hon. Shokeye accuses the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, the immediate past governor of Osun State, of orchestrating the move. He alleges that Oyetola, in collusion with the Commissioner of Police, the Director of State Services (DSS), and the State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), deployed armed personnel to seize control of the council secretariats.
"This unlawful invasion is not only a direct attack on our democratic institutions but also a clear violation of the rule of law and a threat to public peace and order," stated Hon. Shokeye. "Even more disturbing is the fact that security agencies, who are meant to uphold the law, were present while these illegal acts were being carried out. This is unjust, unlawful, and unacceptable. Law enforcement agencies must never be seen aiding and abetting criminal activities."
Hon. Shokeye highlights the recent legal precedent: "The Federal High Court in Osogbo declared the local government elections held on October 15, 2022, unconstitutional, leading to an appeal that was dismissed by the Court of Appeal on January 13, 2025, which upheld the initial ruling. Despite this, members of the APC have attempted to illegally occupy government offices, resulting in violence and property damage, with law enforcement present during these acts." In response to the situation, Osun State Governor Sen. Ademola Adeleke has ordered all individuals to avoid local government secretariats to maintain order. The PDP has complied with this directive to prioritize peace and stability.
The accusations leveled against Oyetola and the security agencies have sparked outrage and calls for an investigation into the matter. Hon. Shokeye's condemnation adds fuel to the fire, highlighting the potential for further unrest and instability in the state.
